The hardships of returning to a game

I decided to get back into FFXIV, not because of the new expansion, but because I miss this game so much, and it’s a perfect stress relief. But getting back into a game you have been absent from for over a year, is not easy…

Where am I?

Seriously, I don’t know where to go… Or, I actually do, but I only remember places by their looks and not by their name anymore. My first hour went with teleporting back and forth to locations I found in my journal, until I decided to just follow up on the main story quest… Jeez!

Who am I?

I already knew that my FC was no more, as a friend from the game informed me of this on Skype when it happened. I also knew that some old members left the server to play somewhere else. But looking at my now updated friend list, I barely know anyone anymore, and I bet they don’t know me either. Trying to get into contact with my friend from Skype has also been futile, for now at least.

What am I?

Okay, I’m a healer, but… I can’t remember my skills and spells anymore, for any of my classes and professions. I decided to level my mining to lvl 60, because I didn’t need much exp, and then see how it went. The thing is that I had forgotten about levequests, so it took a lot longer than it had to, haha! I found a lvl 60 treasure map, so I went into battle as a lvl 60 machinist. Having forgotten all my skills, I just busted my way through the monsters with luck and noobness, and THEN remembered about turrets…

Who are you?

As mentioned in an earlier post, I really hate it when I get random invites, but that’s just one of those things you have to deal with when running around without being in an FC. So I already got an invite, and I got pissed. No message before inviting me, and it wasn’t even someone I knew from back in the days. I expect more of this rude behavior, but I’ll try not to explode…

What’s that dungeon?

I just unlocked a lot of hard modes and whatnot, but I don’t even remember the normal modes for dungeons anymore. Boss tactics? What’s that? Needless to say, that I won’t jump into a healer role again anytime soon for those levels, as I’d just kill everyone.

What now?

Well, I’m quite uncertain as to what I should do now. I’m thinking about just continuing where I left, and level everything that still needs leveling. I guess the best thing to do is going into low lvl dungeons and guildhests, to slowly learn my skills and boss tactics again. As for the expansion, I’m not even gonna buy it right now. For the first 2 parts of the game, I went and spent all my money on the physical collectors editions, which I treasure a lot, but I don’t have that kind of money right now, and frankly, I don’t care that much about it. Right now, I just need to get back into the game, but it’s gonna be a struggle, as I’m not a person who plays daily anymore, or even that much at all. Wish me luck?

Pokémon Go – One week in

Like so many other people in this world, I’ve started playing Pokémon Go, because it’s fun, regardless of what you might think of the franchise. The last time I played Pokémon was back when Blue was still new in Europe, and that wasn’t exactly last year. I can’t say I was hyped about Pokémon Go though, and patiently waited until its official release in Denmark, as I had hoped for the servers to be more stable by then. Okay, so they are still not stable, but it’s getting better.

I registered an account close to midnight on the 16th, but since it was impossible to enter the game with the newly created account, I decided to log in with my Google account. Of course this resulted in me not being able to use my normal nickname, which I had already registered on another account, but I just chose something else. It didn’t take long for me to understand the basics, and a few Pidgey’s and Weedle’s were caught that night. Those 2 seem to be the most common Pokémon in our apartment, so I kept catching them the next day.

Actually, I was already lvl 5 and a member of Team Instinct before I even left the apartment the first time after I started playing. Since I suffer from severe anxiety when having to leave the apartment, I never go out alone, unless I have something important to do, like going to the doctor or the like. After going out hunting with my boyfriend though, and thinking about how horrible it is to stay in an apartment with monkeys as upstairs neighbors (see previous post), I decided to go out alone on Wednesday. It took me a while to leave the building, but I eventually did.

This resulted in me walking 8 kilometers for 5 hours, getting a little sunburned, and me now knowing where the weirdest Pokéstops in the city are located. I actually wanted to go to the beach at first to look for sea glass, but it was plastered with tourists! Me + people = nope. I ended up wandering close to the water up and down the harbor and beaches, where I found a lot of water Pokémon, funny enough. 1 big Cocio, ½ liter of water and 2 second hand stores later, I found myself with used jewelry in my bag, my phone plugged into a portable battery, and myself waiting outside my boyfriend’s work.

His plan was to come pick me up after work, and go hunt with me, but I was so tired, my feet hurt like hell, my arms were burnt red from the sun, and we had to attend his cousins birthday even though we were not originally going to. I guess that was the result of teasing her with her birthday gift for 2 months. It was a Carmine artbook by the way, an item which screamed her name when I found it a while back. Anyway, it turns out that her big brother plays Pokémon Go too, but there is absolutely nothing to get out there where they live, other than maybe some Rattata’s, Weedle’s and the occasional Ekans. There is not even a Pokéstop nearby…

That made me think about our new house, where it turns out there is nothing to get either, so I guess I’ll write the creators and ask for a Pokéstop. No, I’m not kidding, I’ll write them.

While Thursday was rather lazy (besides getting a Hitmonlee without leaving the couch), because the whole country was struck by some evil curse breaking the mobile internet for hours and hours. I decided to take another walk yesterday, while getting help from my mentor when getting out the door. She walked me to a part of the beach where there were almost no people (aside from some nudists further down *cannot unsee*), and this time I looked for sea glass. After almost 2 hours of doing so, I had enough and started hunting Pokémon. This time I walked 10 kilometers, and hatched a Jynx right behind our car at my boyfriend’s work, and guess who was already on his way there? Perfect timing!

This time though, I got a major sunburn, and my arms hurt like hell, so I’ll just stay inside today and lick my wounds. Battling in Gyms yesterday was more than enough for me right now anyway. My poor Magmar was sent home late yesterday evening with wounds all over, and he needs a break too. I’m home alone most of the day, so I guess I’ll take a cold shower, finish the bracelets I’m currently making, pull apart the second hand jewelry I got on my first Pokéjourney, and then maybe grab a bite to eat, which isn’t always easy when it’s as hot as it is right now.

So how about you, have you played it yet? Is it a yay or nay for you? 🙂

Annoying people in MMO’s… and how to avoid being one of them

I like playing MMO’s. It can be very fun and relaxing, if you play a good game with some nice people. But like everywhere on the internet, there are people who just want to ruin your day. Some might do it on purpose, while others simply don’t know how annoying they really are. Here is my personal list of annoying behavior in MMO’s, and how to stop being that rude bum, who I’ll be likely to hate. The list is in no particular order.

Duelists: Games with the ability to duel are plenty, and those who want to use that option are also plenty. But I wonder, do they ever think about if others want to duel them? I’ve only ever done duels, when there was an easy achievement involved, or because it was my first time ever in the game, and I wanted to try it out. But overall, I don’t want to duel! I actually despise PVP, which is why I am often on RP servers. People who walk up to me, and try forcing me into a duel, without even asking me first, are just plain pricks, and they won’t get any reaction from me, other than maybe an ignore. Quite often, those people are over geared, and just looking for an easy win anyway, which is why they often target new or casual players. To avoid coming across as an idiot, just contact the person whom you want to duel first, and make sure that person is around your level of experience. If anything, state in the chat, that you are looking for a duel partner, and you might just find a few like-minded people to share your interest with.

Little helpers: This might just be me having issues with such people, but I really hate it, when someone is following me all the time, attacking my monsters, and get impatient when I’m AFK… when I don’t even know who that person is. The same goes for those who want to give me free stuff when I’m low level, and just open a trade without asking. Chances are, the character I’m playing is just an alt, and I really don’t want freebies, because I’m already loaded with tons of stuff from other characters. Once again, I recommend asking before just “helping”, as you might be seen as someone who wants something for your effort, or even worse, as someone who is trying to steal mobs from other players. It’s really nice to help others, but not if they never asked for it.

LFG / WTS spam: Yeah, I get it. You are looking for a tank for that specific dungeon, and I understand it’s hard to find one. I also understand, that you have a nice item you want to trade for cash, because to you that item is useless, but to someone else it might be a true treasure. But do you really have to let the whole server know 10 times every second? I don’t know about others, but I tend to avoid such people, and won’t join their group or buy their stuff. Instead of spamming, try writing a short and neat recruitment message, and post it every time you need to update it, or when one minute or more has passed. As for item sales, there is usually a market of some sort, where you can put your stuff up for sale. Advertising for something that is up for grabs a few times, is better than spamming for people to meet you at the fountain.

Random invites: I know this irks a lot of people, if not just about everyone who gets them. That random invite from someone you don’t know, and after the random invite, probably someone you don’t even WANT to know. Being guildless doesn’t mean I want to join any random guild on the server, so don’t throw invites at me, as it will just cause me to do the exact opposite of what you want me to. Same goes for group invites, as I will not join a group by force. I’ll just think you are an idiot, and plant your sorry bum on my blacklist of other people like you. So don’t be a jerk, and send out random invites to people you don’t know. Ask before you do anything, and you will either get a yes or no. I usually answer people who politely ask me if I want to join their guild or group, and even if it’s a no, I’ll do it in a nice way. That way, we can both leave a good impression on one another, and maybe I’ll join someday.

I could say that I hate ninja looters too, because I do. But that’s something I’ve only ever experienced to the fullest in WoW, as other games try their best to avoid such methods of item obtainment.

The list would become too long, if I were to write about every kind of person that can make me angry in an MMO, but these 4 kinds of people are the worst really, and they should paint a good picture of what sort of gamers I avoid.

If you play MMO’s, or did in the past, I’m sure you’ve met some of them, and maybe even have a story to tell? Let me know what people ruin your gaming experiences, and how you would like them to stop being jerks towards you. Who knows, maybe some of them will read this, and think twice about their actions 🙂
